A basic strategy in the manipulation of discourse for rhetorical purposes, along with addition, transposition, and substitution.

Figures of Subtraction

  • anesis
  • meiosis
If not strictly "subtraction," meiosis is a kind of semantic reduction: the reference to something with a name disproportionately lesser than its nature.
  • charientismus
  • tapinosis
  • syncope
Cutting letters or syllables from the middle of a word
  • synaloepha
Omitting one of two vowels which occur together at the end of one word and the beginning of another.
  • restrictio
