General Rhetorical Strategies
A general rhetorical strategy and companion to amplification.
Both of these strategies have been employed in rhetorical
pedagogy to give students practice in becoming adept at manipulating form
and content (see also copia). The amplification
and abbreviation of literary models was recommended by Hermogenes in his progymnasmata.
Abbreviation is thus closely tied to the rhetorical practice of the imitation
